45 litres of Grape Juice

October 1, 2010
Kate and Vicky in the supermarket with a trolley full of juice. Kate has 45 cartons of KDD juice, and Vicky has 12 cartons of NADA juice.

Kate and Vicky prepare for Turkey Race in style!

So anyway, I promised Vicky I’d show her how to make red wine.  It’s the Turkey Race coming up in December, which is the biggest event of the Kuwait Sailing Club year; and it’s about time we started brewing for the mulled wine for the beach!  So, after Shanghai, off we tootled to City Centre Supermarket, and we bought 57 litres of juice, 2 kilos of sugar, 4 sachets of yeast, a 25 litre plastic bin, and a round picnic table for our aviary!

It reminded me of the first time I bought brewing gear in Kuwait. I was in the checkout line with a trolley containing 24 litres of red grape juice, and a bag of sugar. Not much else, since I was skint, and couldn’t afford to disguise the trolley as a grocery shop! A Kuwaiti in full dish-dasha joined the line behind me, and started staring at the contents. As I broke into a cold sweat, he asked me “Excuse me dear, but do you have yeast?”. I shook my head in mortification, and he told me he’d save my place if I wanted to get some, and he gave me directions!

Oh, I said I’d post a picture of the aviary too, and here it is:

Marc standing in a fairly narrow yard, with a tiled path. Planters have been built up on either side, and there is a green shade netting on a high frame. The planters are fairly sparse, but there is a papaya tree and a banana tree with a Bird of paradise, some cannas, and some cactus.
Growing a rainforest in Kuwait won’t be easy, but if anyone can, Marc can!
